Viceroy and Violence: Lord Mountbatten, the June 3rd Plan and the Violence of Partition in India during the Summer of 1947

This thesis studies the role of the last Viceroy of India, Lord Louis Mountbatten, in the transfer of power process and eventual partition of India during the summer of 1947. While Mountbatten was certainly a part of the transfer of power process, the blame for the violence of partition does not rest on his shoulders, but rather should be shared among the many players active in the Indian political landscape during the summer of 1947.
